Though their work spans a variety of scales and functions—including outdoor monuments, indoor installations, video works, furniture, and a set for the band Yeasayer, their work is united by a common motif: a modular, crystalline form. “For us, design is about putting in place a process from which you can guarantee surprises,” Lasch once said, while Aranda notes, “Our understanding of modularity is something that’s not quite obvious or fixed, something that can be a tool for finding infinite variation.”

“Their work—from the 2003 Brooklyn Pigeon Project to their recent Pamphlet Architecture publication Tooling—is characterized by both rigor and whimsy. Blown Artinfo interviewed our director Xiao Lu. She said “this year, Design Miami opened the Curio section, so we applied to that section and got accepted. The theme this year is to present very interesting installations that challenge the common design narratives, and I think Naihan Li’s ‘I Am a Monument’ collection is one of the most interesting that we are developing at the moment and quite fits into the theme of the section.

We’re showing just one piece in the Curio section, a cabinet in the form of the CCTV Building in Beijing. We want to premiere it at the fair — it’s never been shown. The other pieces in the collection were shown in the Beijing space at the end of September. The space limit at the Curio section means that it’s not possible to show a lot of pieces anyway, so we want to bring the most extraordinary piece, the CCTV piece.”

Especially for CCTV wardrobe, Gallery ALL will display it in Design Miami for Design Curio program this December.

I AM A MONUMENT originated form Naihan’s recognition of the Chinese desire for giant art installations in their homes. People want to own things that are monumental. This desire traces back to Chinese traditional paintings, which play with the idea of scale from a subjective point of view and minimize the universe. Chinese artists attempt to zoom in to a large part of the world on a small scale.

Naihan Li x Lane Crawford

Chinese architect-designer Naihan Li’s another extended series of “The Crates” collaborated with gallery ALL, which is also an exclusive collection for Lane Crawford. Naihan Li’s multi-tasking furniture for the 21st century resembles shipping crates that open up to reveal entirely crafted environments. The designer presents four crates reflecting modern apartment living: The Edit, The Boardroom, The Living Room and The Wardrobe.

Longing for a space where she could both live and work, Naihan Li designs furniture that both satisfies the daily requirements and mobility. Living in Beijing has inspired her to create a line for those who covet portable spaces with leisure elements. This line maintains a sense of order amidst urban chaos.

The New York Times T Magazine mentions Naihan Li’s recent works “I AM A MONUMENT” in Beijing Design Week presented by Gallery ALL. The I am a Monument collection shrinks a landmark building 100 times and turns it into a utilitarian furniture piece, allowing collectors to contain something that is extremely large inside a room of their house.

The exhibition “I AM A MONUMENT”, continues at Gallery ALL Beijing located in 751 Design Park, an old factory-turned emerging design center adjacent to the renowned 798 Art District in Northeast Beijing. Naihan Li: I AM A MONUMENT featured in Designboom

Gallery ALL’s current exhibition by Chinese designer Naihan Li, “I AM A MONUMENT” is featured in Designboom. The article introduced Naihan Li’s new works, Edinburgh Palm House, NY Stock Exchange Shrine, Armillary Whisky Bar, The Pentagon Daybed and UN Building Bookcase. As the article mentioned, “Naihan Li continues to explore her artistic passions through design, developing furniture collections, which simultaneously entertain form and function.”

Indeed, I AM A MONUMENT originated from Naihan’s recognition of the Chinese desire for giant art installations in their homes. This collection shrinks a landmark building 100 times and turns it into a utilitarian furniture piece, allowing collectors to contain something that is extremely large inside a room of their house.

Artsy’s New Post Talked About Our Talented Artists

We love the headline of Artsy’s new post of Gallery ALL written by Charlie Ambler,  “Two Chinese Designers Challenge Traditions, Old and New.” Design is not the narrow application of formal skills, it is a way of thinking. As the post writes, “like many designers, Naihan Li and Zhoujie Zhang value practicality over grand gestures, but their works present a unique sort of revolution: that of everyday life.”

Gallery ALL will continue its mission to bridge the design gap between East and West, and provide all young talents and promising designers all over the world  more opportunities to present their works to a global market.

Gallery ALL is Now on L’ArcoBaleno

Gallery ALL is pleased to be the first Chinese design gallery on L’ArcoBaleno. You can find our Crate Collection by Naihan Li under the ‘new additions’  on L’ArcoBaleno now!

As the co-founder of L’ArcoBaleno, Ambra Medda, says, “Every object has a story,” the story behind the Crate Collection is definitely among the most interesting ones. Inspired by Naihan Li’s own transient lifestyle and the millions of workers who migrate around China each year, Li’s outwardly simple containers fold open to reveal hidden wardrobes, bookshelves, beds and dressers. She questions the concept of dwelling while accommodating the requirements of a modern and mobile world. “All my creations are designed to improve the life I’m living right now,” says Li. “To do that you need to understand what life is about. It’s a process.”

L’ArcoBaleno is a website for people to explore, discover, and collect extraordinary designs from around the world. The site mixes a curated marketplace with intelligent, magazine-style content covering all kinds of innovative and intriguing work across the spectrum of design.
